Vanessa Gidden is an artist who is inspired by the complexity and softness of flowers. Flower Jar with Blue and White Stripy Background is the third in her recent series of acrylic paintings which incorporate striped negative spaces or backgrounds and loosely arranged flowers. She often depicts the same bloom as it matures over the time it takes to complete the work. Time, it could be said, actually helps create the bouquet as each flower is respresented multiples times as they open their petals. She considers Time to be one of her essential collaborators. These works also depict her interest in materiality, for example glass mason jars, as seen in her depictioon of warped stems and leaves as they are distorted through the glass.
